AUGUST 2010 ALUMNUS OF THE MONTH Mr. Bernard King
Our alumnus of the month of August is Bernard King, first President of the California chapter and currently its Vice-President. In a school made famous for producing accomplished students in the sciences, Bernard was one of the very few students who went up to the sixth form at the Prince of Wales School studying English Literature, History and, quite interestingly, Latin. House captain of the irrepressible Granville House in 1967, Bernard was a sprinter and an outstanding soccer player. He represented the school in soccer and played, then in the outside left position in a team which included a couple of first division soccer players. At Fourah Bay College, Bernard continued to excel in soccer and represented the University of Sierra Leone at the West African University Games held in Freetown in 1969. He also played first division soccer for a brief period. After graduating from Fourah Bay College, Bernard obtained a Master’s degree in the Administration of Higher Education from the University of Manchester in England. He also did a three-month stint at the University of Ife in Nigeria (now Obafemi Awolowo University) where he acquired a Certificate in University Administration. Professionally, he taught English and History at the Prince of Wales School in the early 70s before serving in the administration at Fourah Bay College where he rose to the position of Planning Officer of the University of Sierra Leone. He left the world of education and worked in Human Resources and Marketing Management in industry in Sierra Leone before relocating to California. In California, Bernard has re-ignited his original passion for working with young people. He has not only been teaching English but has also coached soccer and tennis, his favorite hobbies. He is married to Betty, another teacher and they have been blessed with three adult children, all professionals …. Gina in London, Ndidi in New Jersey, and Amaline who still lives in California. |
