Philip PalmerAlumnus of the Month - March 2010

 

Philip J. A. Palmer, Jr attended the Prince of Wales secondary school for 3 years and upon completing his education, attended the technical institute for 1 year.

He worked at the Barclays bank for 3 years and came to the United States to further his education. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Finance at the University of Maryland and is currently completing his Masters degree at the same institution.

Philip has been married for 10 years to a wonderful wife named Glennis and lives in Bowie, Maryland with their family. They have been blessed with 3 children, 2 boys and a girl, Philip III aged 13, Jonis, aged 8 and Karina, aged 7.

He coaches soccer at the local Boys and Girls club, is a Methodist and is involved in many organizations at his church He currently works as a senior corporate recruiter for a government contractor, and is currently the Social secretary of the Old Prince Walean Association (Washington, DC, Metro Chapter.

Prince of Wales Alumnus of the Month

The Prince of Wales Global Alumni Association is Proud to announce that Capt. Christian J Smith has been Selected for the month of December 2009

PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT: Captain Christian J. Smith is currently serving the United States military as the Commander of the HHC, SHAPE battalion based in Belgium. On Friday, 13th November 2009, he took over from Captain Joven Kabrick as Commander.

Captain Smith’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal (4OLC), Army Achievement Medal (6OLC), Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal(2), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-commissioned Officer Proficiency Developmental Ribbon (2), Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon(2). Captain Christian Smith started his military career as a 711 (Administrative Specialist) on 12 February 1997.

Smith went through basic training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson in the USA. His first duty station was Fort Hood, Texas where he served in the 2nd Battalion 7th Cavalry Regiment. During this assignment, Smith successfully completed his undergraduate degree, started his graduate degree, applied for and was selected for Officer Candidate School (OCS) as an Adjutant General (AG) Officer. He further attended the Armor Officer Basic Course (OBC) at Fort Knox.

Alex Blanchard

Dr. Alex F.J. Blanshard, B.Sc (Hons) Chem., M.Sc., PhD, PGCE, NPQH.

INTRODUCTION

The Prince of Wales Global Alumni Association is proud to announce that Alex Blanshard ’74 has been selected for the month of October

PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT Dr. Alex Blanshard is an accomplished Advance Skilled Teacher in Science and the Director of Learning at the Highsted Grammar School in Sittingbourne, Kent. He has been involved in training many colleagues of all standings, from classroom assistants to Heads of Departments. He has made significant contributions to the education of very many students both in Sierra Leone and the UK in many different institutions including inner London schools, selective schools and comprehensive schools. He is currently a lead practitioner, supporting schools and sixth form colleges in the South East of England in applying the new A-Level programme. His research interests have been both impressively specialised and imaginatively diversified: alongside applied scientific research towards his Masters and Doctoral degrees, he also undertook, for a brief period in 1995, investigations in the field of Social Anthropology while at University College, London. Alex will in the very near future receive further validation and professional recognition of his sterling achievements in the form of accession to the prestigious rank of fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Melbourne GarberMelbourne A.A. Garber, B.Sc(Combined Hons.), M.Sc, C.Eng, MIStructE, MASCE, MACI, MSLIE.

PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT: Melbourne Garber is a structural engineer with 27 years experience. After graduating from Leeds University, he joined the world renowned engineering firm Ove Arup and Partners (more recently known as Arups). This firm is most well known for the structural engineering design of the Sydney Opera House. Melbourne worked with Ove Arup for 18 years (9 in the UK and 9 in the US) and while there worked on a myriad of projects that include the following projects in the UK: The British Library in Euston, London and The Prudential Complex, Holborn, London and the following projects in the US: the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Mashantucket Peqout Museum and Research Center for the Pequot Nation in Connecticut, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey and the $1.4bn International Arrivals Building (Terminal 4) at JFK Airport in New York.

Millern Jarrett-ThorpeMillern has shown a consistent committment and dedication to the association over the years.This has been expressed morally by way of regular attendance and participation in meetings, involvement in "behind the scene " efforts to promote harmony among members and for projecting an infectious enthusiasm for the prosperity of the association. Financially, he has been one of the most generous donors since the founding of the association. Millern's contribution transcends the association as he provides strong moral and financial support to other organizatons in the Sierral Leone community. He is a good example of a Princewalean who is an accomplished professional and who has also built a successful business from the ground up.

Millern Jarrett-Thorpe was born in Freetown Sierra Leone. He attended the Regent square municipal school and then attended The Prince of Wales School. This school prepared him to proceed to London where he studied architecture at the University of London. He is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
